Trade Days

I’ve been meaning to post for a few days now. I  just haven’t gotten around to it.  This past weekend I went out to Weatherford to do the Trade Days to raise some money for the 3-Day walk.   It was actually alot of fun, even though it was crazy hot.  We spent Wednesday and Thursday going through my granddad’s barn to get some stuff for the sale, and then spent Friday-Sunday actually out selling stuff.  We made close to $300, which isn’t too bad. But when you consider we got almost the exact same amount working for just 6 hours outside of Wal-Mart, it sort of makes it disappointing.

I got to see almost everyone over the weekend, which was nice.  I didn’t get to see Lori, but I think she was busy doing school stuff all weekend.  We also didn’t get to go to Caleb’s birthday party, which I was sad to miss.

I also got a chance to go out to visit my grandma’s headstone.  I hadn’t seen it since it was placed at the grave site.  In fact, I hadn’t been out to the grave site yet, either.  It looked really nice.

In about a week and a half I’ll be heading down to South Padre Island.  I’m totally excited about that.  Not really looking foward to the 10 hour drive, but hopefully that won’t be too bad…

Reviews

I recently finished reading Fast Food Nation. Pretty darn good read about the rise of fast food corporations and how throughly they infiltrate our lives. It will definately make you rethink going out for the quick burger again.

I also had a chance to see Wall-E this past Sunday too. That was a really, really good movie! It had a clever story line and was just really well done. I’m supposed to go see the 4th Indiana Jones movie this week with my sister. I’m torn on whether or not I want to see it. It has just gotten so many not good reviews. I’d hate to have my love for Indy tainted by this new movie.

I’m supposed to head to Benbrook sometime this week, I’m just not sure if I’m going tomorrow or Wednesday. This coming weekend is the trade days. I’m kind of nervous about it, but hopefully all will go well.

Exhausted!

I am worn the heck out.  Sherry and I spent all last week at a ranch about an hour outside of San Antonio.  It was a really nice vacation, but it was exhausting!  There was TONS to do.  In the mornings we would get up for a 7am hike through the nature trails that were near the ranch.  Then throughout the day they offered different classes that we could take.   We thought about doing some of the horseback riding (of which there was plenty of), but we never did it.  In hindsight, I really wish we would have.  And on Friday we went out to float on the river.  All in all a good trip!  There were tons of people there.  One of the groups was about 12 girls who were there for the horse-riding camp.  Friday night, a whole bunch of us went out to the local rodeo.  I hadn’t been to a rodeo in a long time, and I had forgotten how fun they were!  And to make it even more interesting, the horse camp girls were doing an exhibition in it!  So it was kind of neat to watch them practice all week and then see it pay off that night.

This weekend is the fake 4th of July in Allen.  If we’re not exhausted from helping Chris move (assuming they actually move this weekend), the fireworks should be fun!

Vacation has begun

Well, school has finally finished.  Kind of.  I’ve been doing professional development stuff this week, but after tomorrow I’m done for the summer!  This Friday I’m off to go to Benbrook.  And thus will begin my super busy summer.  And I really can’t wait, because right now, while I’m not in my pdh classes, I’m at home while everyone else is at work.  Boring.

I’ve also started up my summer reading, and right now I’m reading Fast Food Nation.  It’s got kind of a dense beginning, but it’s very interesting.  Hopefully I’ll get it done with in the next week or two, because after today’s pdh class (all about novels) I now have some classics that I’ve never read that I want to put on the list.  Next up: Heart of Darkness.

Right now I’m watching a movie I thought I’d never watch again…Species.  I hated it the first time I watched it, and now I’m remembering why.  Man this movie sucks.

Lesson Learned

If I thought that last week’s sunburn was rough, this weekend is even worse. At least it isn’t on my shoulders. This time it is on my legs, which I can handle a little better. But worse it is also on my face, which is the super suck kicker. I thought I’d be okay since I wasn’t really in the sun that long (the shade crept up on us a lot fast than we thought it would), but I guess it was long enough. The good part is that we did raise a fair amount of money doing the Wal-Mart fundraiser. We sold some of our stuff, but mostly people were just dropping of cash. And we figured we’d just be getting people’s loose change. We did get quite a bit (like $11 worth of change), but most of it was in bills. People saw us and would just grab what was in their pocket and dump it in our jar. All-in-all we raised $260. Not bad for sitting in the sun for 6 hours just saying “Good morning!”

Next week is our last week of school. I am SO freaking glad that it is here. I love finals week.

On a completely unrelated note, my friend Keri had her baby! She hasn’t updated her site yet (for obvious reasons), but hopefully she’ll get some pics of Gabe up soon. He’s pretty adorable!

Now I’m going to apply some more aloe, crawl into bed, and die.

Crispy

I am red like a lobster.  I went for a training walk yesterday, and stupid me forgot to put on sunscreen.  It wasn’t too bad yesterday, but by the time I crawled into bed I thought I was going to die.

We’re down to the home stretch now.  Just 7 more days.  And since I’m taking Friday off, just 6 more for me.  I’ll be heading to Benbrook this Friday to get ready for our first fundraiser.  Basically we’re going to be panhandling outside at Wal-Mart.  Well, that and selling some 3-Day stuff.  I wouldn’t have thought to do something like this, but on the 3-Day forums everyone raves that this is one of the best ways to go, so we’ll give it a shot.  After that we’re going to do two trade days in Weatherford and a yard sale at my dad’s. I’d like to do more yard sales, but we just don’t have time.  Me and Sherry are doing our San Antonio trip mid June, she all over the place the rest of the summer, and I’m supposed to go to the beach with Rob and April at the end of July.  Just too busy!
My cousin Lori made a ton of fundraising money selling snacks at her school’s field day.  Wish I had thought of that!  We just had our field day this past Thursday.  There were a few glitches, but all in all it went really well!  The kids seemed to have a lot of fun.  We definitely have some ideas to make it better for next year, but this year was good.

Rock Star

It’s been a while since I posted anything of substance. Looking back on the past month, it seems like I’ve been really busy, but I can’t think of anything to say. I will say that gas by my house is now up to $3.70. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

I only have 14 school days left! Woot! And with field day, review days, and finals, I actually only have 5 days of teaching left! I was hoping to sneak one more novel in, but there’s no way to do that with 5 days. We’ll do bunches of short stories instead. Truth be told, I’m kind of looking foward to having something to do again. Both my regs and Pre-AP have been doing sort of self-directs lessons, and I don’t have much to do. I know I shouldn’t complain about having some down time, but this has been like 2 weeks of down time. It makes the day go by so slowly. But that’s just been the nature of the beast with this novel. Oh well. 14 Days!

I’ve also been fairly geeking out every weekend. Rob bought Rock Band for PS3. Man, this game is so much fun, and I’m so ashamed to admit that! I’ll go over, and Rob, April and I will play at least once in the weekend. This weekend Dawn is bringing Brookie over to play and THAT should actually be alot of fun! I love Brookie. She is the nicest kid in the world, and she’s the kind of kid every parents wishes they had. I imagine that Dawn is going to have a small fit when this year is over and her baby goes to high school. But back to Rock Band. I’ve actually gotten really good at it. I was so proud of myself when I played The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” on the little fake drums they have. It’s alot harder than you would think!

And I have a quick book review. I recently read Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer. It’s about murderers Dan and Ron Lafferty and their fundamentalist Morman religion. Actually, it was a pretty good history of Mormonism, the split the fundamentalists took, and how it has all evolved. The author splices the evolution of the Lafferty brothers and eventually the murders with all of the history, and it is just a really good read. This is the same author who wrote Into the Wild which was AWESOME! Loved that book. Still haven’t seen the movie.

Speaking of Alaska (re: Into the Wild), I may be going on an Alaskan cruise next summer. My sister and I decided that it was high time we took a family vacation, and decided that is what we want to do. My dad is all gung ho about. In fact, he’d probably go right now if he wasn’t having to wait on us. We kids obviously can’t afford to do that this summer (nor do many of us have the time), so we’re gonna save up a year and just go next summer. Woot!

Journalism at its best

Stephen Colbert, how I love you.

Highway Robbery

I had to go get gas for my car today. $3.45 a gallon. Vomit.

On a side note, it is also that time of year to begin the countdown.  Six weeks and and 2 days until the end of school. Woot!
Also, I’m also going to close the comments on my site. I’m tired of spam.

Are you ready to rock?

I totally geeked out last night. We had been watching No Country for Old Men, but stopped it about halfway through.  Don’t get me wrong, it was a great movie.  But I had already read the book, and it was JUST like the book.  I mean exactly.  So the movie was a little boring.

But that’s not the point.  The point is we stopped an Oscar winning movie so we could play Guitar Hero.  It was backwards evolution  Over Easter weekend, I had made fun of Chris and Matt (especially Chris) for how retarded he looked playing this game.  So I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about playing myself. But I have to say, damn that game is fun!  We stayed up until nearly 2 am playing.  I was actually pretty good at it.  Rob, not so much (he’d like to blame it on the drinking, but we all know he just sucked).  I’ve been wanting a PS3 for a while know so that I could play Call of Duty 4, but know I think I kind of want guitar hero!  Oh geeky.

On a side note, we have just 9 weeks of school!  Woot!  It seems like I’ve got so much going on for the rest of the year.  My sister and I are doing a fundraiser in Weather at the end of May that I need to get ready for, and we’re doing the Weatherford trade days a few times over the summer.  My granddad is donating all the stuff for us to sell at the trade days, but it’s two storage sheds worth of stuff, and we’ve got to go through all of it before we can sell it!  It’s going to be a long process.   I have had so much fun trying to get fundraising activities going for the 3-Day.  I just hope that they pan out!
